Varsity Cheerleading · 2019 Varsity Cheer Preview

This season in cheer is off to a great start. Seckman’s varsity cheer coach, Valeri Wingo, is ready for this season and is confident in the girls preparation. “The athletes are consistently building each other up and are finding ways to spread spirit and positive vibes from the entire team.” They are very excited to kick this season off with their honed skills and new format.

Our senior captain who graduated last year was Kaitlyn Shepard, and our new senior captains stepping up this year are Natalie Lehman, Natalie Barada, and our Junior captain is Taylor Hagedorn. “They work very well together to keep the team upbeat and organized, and they are all very talented and dedicated.”

Coach Wingo’s goals this season are to complete the Homecoming and Fox routines in advance so the week before the big events the teams can focus on what they will do on the sidelines, not just focusing on the routines. They are also trying to raise school spirit by not only decorating the lockers for teams they cheer for, but for all athletes, they have also made plans to attend games for each sport.

This year for Soccer Cheer the fall JV team and the Jaguar Elite team are sharing the responsibility of cheering at all home soccer games. It is a little different from last year, but by doing this, and cheering football, the girls will be able to cheer for several games this fall season.

The future for Seckman Cheer is promising, despite many seniors graduating this year. Wingo is extremely confident in her cheer team to stay strong with the emerging talent she sees in the JV squad.

While the athletes over the years change, one thing remains the same with Coach Wingo: high expectations. As long as she is around, the Seckman community can continue to expect a disciplined and highly entertaining cheer program – one dedicated to growing school spirit.
